Activity | Creating a Home Altar

ree

Sometimes, we need a special way to celebrate loved ones who have passed away or to comfort us when times are tough.

One thing you can do is gather the things you need to create a small chalice and worship kit. That way, when you want to use it, it’s ready to go. There is no right or wrong choice when you decide what goes in your kit; it’s about what’s important to you.

Gather a Chalice
ree

The first thing most UUs gather is a chalice or candle to light at the start of a reflection or gathering. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Some people make their own chalice by putting a plant saucer on top of an empty plant pot or even just using a fancy saucer, tray, or candle holder.  If you wish to invest in a longterm, fancier chalice, searching Etsy will yield many options available for sale.

Designate a Space
ree

Identify a small table or shelf for your chalice altar, or find a box or basket where you can store the items when you’re not using them. You may wish to color or decorate the box, but plain is fine too.

Creating a dedicated space for your home altar will help make it easily accessible.

Pick a Special Altar Cloth
ree

An altar cloth is a nice way to provide a base for your altar. Spread the cloth on a table or bookshelf space, then lay out the chalice and other items.

Chimes and Music
ree

A bell or singing bowl is a good way to bring your thoughts to the present time and location. Use the opportunity to set intent for your altar time.

If music is an important spiritual connection for yourself, include a hymnal, or bookmark music on your phone or tablet that can be your go-to when the moment's right. Choices might include our UU Hymns, but also anything that speaks to you.

Special Objects
ree

Put around the chalice as many special objects as you’d like; photos of people and pets you love, a bit of nature like a pinecone or flowers, a plant or rock, something to recognize a special day like Remembrance or Chanukkah, for example.

Change out the objects and colors to match the seasons or what you’re thinking about.

When using your home altar, remember your departed loved ones with photos or other keepsakes. If you don't have photos or a special keepsake, find something that symbolizes your connection with your ancestors.
