"Director of Youth Music Kristen Miller and Director of Church Music Justin Murphy-Mancini share the UU Christmas hymn "Winter Night," written by Shelley Jackson Denham."
"Shelley Jackson Denham (1950-2013) was a prolific hymn-writer, with several of her texts and tunes present in both currently-used Unitarian Universalist hymnals. While uniquely UU Christmas music is not widely-known beyond the carol "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear," Denham has penned a poignant and tuneful lullaby that reflects a UU interpretation of the Christmas story."
Winter night, clear and bright: a weary world is sleeping.
And then a cry fills earth and sky: a newborn child is weeping.
Refrain: Hush-a-bye, lullaby, blessed little baby.
Drops of pain flow like rain: tell why your tears are falling:
for humankind, so frail, unkind, or for your own life’s calling?
Refrain.
Holy Child, Every Child, your life will have its season.
And each new day your heart may pray for grace,
for peace, for reason.
Refrain.
